Birth of the iPad "Name" Case: 3D Printing in action March 11th, 2011
End of january, we started the Custom iPad Case Project, in which we wanted to create a way for people to easily customize their iPad Case before they purchase it.
We got a lot of positive reactions and 80 backers financially supported the project! However, we did not meet the required funding amount via the Kickstarter platform. So we have been working on alternative ways to fund our developments.
We believe people want to personalize the accessories they carry around daily. Some will want to have more control over how their product looks than others. From the feedback we received from you we now know more about how to develop easy to use software for this purpose. Our team is working on a different version of an online customization app that we will launch this year.
In the course of the project, an added bonus was that we designed some cool iPad Cases with several tasty logos and text embedded into the design! We’d like to show you how one of them came out of the 3D Printing machine, the “Name Case”. The group of first backers that pledged $7 got their name in 3D letters on this case! Here’s a short video of how this special case was manufactured, and how sweet it turned out.
The “Name Case” will be wrapped and shipped to Finland next week, for it to be included in the collection of the Design Museo in Helsinki, Finland. We will keep you posted on its whereabouts and adventures. After all, your name might be on it!
A big thanks to all the backers of our project, we will send each of you a special note via e-mail. Also kudos to the Freedom Of Creation team and Brian Garret.
